What works better – a “carpet extractor” or “steam cleaner”?

I have an older light colored wall to wall carpet with many spots and stains. It's a real pain to treat the spots by hand. I've considered renting the “steam cleaners” from the grocery store or purchasing a hand held “carpet extractor”. Best steam cleaner products?

I am renting a steamcleaner and i want to know the best product to buy with it. I will be shopping at a regular K-Mart/Walmart store.

Also, what about spot treating or high traffic areas with a steam cleaner? We have dirty Cream colored carpeting!!
